Protection From Abuse Orders
A protection from abuse order (PFA) will be granted to protect someone who has been subjected to overt abuse such as punching, choking, hair-pulling, shoving, etc. In certain circumstances a PFA order may result from less obvious abuses such as attempts to cause serious bodily injury, or by placing a victim in reasonable fear of imminent serious bodily injury by verbal threats, physical menace, false imprisonment or a pattern of stalking.
Just as important, the law not only can prohibit further abuse, but an order can also include additional relief such as child custody, child and spousal support and even possession of the marital residence. For safety, a deputy sheriff will serve the order on the perpetrator and the police then have the authority to jail a defendant who violates the order.
