Attorney

An Experienced Attorney With a Varied Background

Knowing a lawyer's background and what he does outside the office can often be helpful in determining whether the client and the attorney will make a good team. To learn more about my background and interests, read below:

Personal History

I was born in 1949 in Lansdale, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In 1977, I relocated to Lancaster County, living first in East Cocalico Township, then Brecknock Township, Berks County, and now in Denver Borough, Lancaster County.

My wife is named Joy, my son, who is 32, is named Eric, my two step-sons are named John and Brandt, and I have a daughter-in-law named Amy. I am a member of the Swamp Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Educational Background

My formal education began in the North Penn School District, continued at Bucknell University where I played football and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1971, and was completed with a Juris Doctor degree in 1975 from the Temple University School of Law. Since then I have been learning from the thousands of clients I have represented and from dozens of continuing education courses.

Employment History

After graduating from law school, I spent two years as an associate with a firm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1977, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to join the law firm of Wenger, Byler and Thomas (now Blakinger, Byler) who had offices in Lancaster City. My life-long dream of hanging out my own shingle and establishing a law office of my own came true in February, 1980, and I have been practicing in Ephrata, Pennsylvania ever since. Finally, in the early 1980's I was also an associate professor of real estate law at the Penn State University, Berks Campus.

I assumed the responsibilities as solicitor of West Cocalico Township and the West Cocalico Township Authority in the mid 1980's; and in December, 1988, I became solicitor for the Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, Zoning Hearing Board. All three entities have been kind enough to retain my services until the present time.

Other Activities and Interests

When not at the office, I have been involved in the following: nine years as a member of the Allegheny Lutheran Church Council, of which two were as president; 29 years as a member, and one year as president, of the East Cocalico Lions Club; 6 years as a member of the Denver-Adamstown Rotary Club; three years on the board of directors of the Adamstown Area Library, and I have been a volunteer divorce mediator with the Lancaster Mediation Center for a little over a year.

Somehow, in addition to all of the above, I found time to write and have published 4 books related to the American Civil War, and I have lectured at numerous Civil War forums.
